For Good?

The Vampire Diaries Season 6: Stelena Is Over — For Good

Romance is alive and well in Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries, but it won’t be happening between Stefan and Elena. At a season premiere screening, executive producer Caroline Dries talked Stelena. What did she have to say?
How does TVD’s infamous love triangle fare in Season 6? "I don't really call it a triangle,” Caroline said, “because Stefan has become more of a soul-friend of Elena's and so he's dealing with his own stuff, but those two are still very connected, but it's more 'How do we maintain Elena and Damon's love story while he's not present?' So that was our challenge as writers, but I think we do a cool job of it."
So, TVD is still on the Delena bandwagon with no sign of jumping off. This may sound like bad news for any Stelena fans out there, but we’re exciting to see their relationship grow as “soul-friends.” Last season’s scene in which the two discussed their hallucinated dream life together was one of our favorites. The realization that, just because they are no longer in love doesn’t mean their love meant anything less, was breathtaking — and a discussion you don’t often see on TV.
As for romance in general in the upcoming season, it is going strong — despite the lack of Stelena. "I can tease that we definitely keep the love stories alive," Caroline said. "We might not play it out in a tradition way, but they will feel very satisfying. You'll have your moments of frustration where the fans hate us and then we'll have moments where they're freaking out and being thankful, so there's kinda like that push-and-pull that we do, but I think it's done in a way that feels fresh for a show that's in Season 6 and has had the same characters and this love triangle for a long time."
The Vampire Diaries Season 6 premieres Thursday, October 2, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
