The Vampire Diaries is at its best when it has an epic villain, and we’re so excited to have another awesome one in the form of Kai (Chris Wood). In fact, he’s inspired us to think about the best TVDvillains of all time. Where does Kai rank? Here’s our complete list.
8. Professor Shane. Ugh, Professor Shane was the worst. He wasn’t evil enough to be threatening, but wasn’t compelling enough to be sympathetic. Instead, he just creeped us (and Bonnie’s dad) out with his relationship to Bonnie, and set into motion a series of events that led to Jeremy’s death — the one that almost stuck.
7. Markos. We never really got to know Markos, the apparently charismatic leader of the Travelers. Though the magic-free bubble he cast around Mystic Falls has had some dramatic results, he wasn’t so threatening in person. Sorry, Markos. Maybe if you’d stuck around longer, we’d care more about you. But, as it stands, you are entirely forgettable.
6. Esther. You’d think the mother of Klaus, Rebekah, and Elijah would be way cooler, but she was not. In fact, she tried to take out her own children in an entirely uncool way. She might be lower on the list if not for the fact that she’s been causing some interesting trouble on The Originals as of late. Also, body swapping.
5. Silas. Silas could have caused some serious trouble with the power he had. Instead, he was more worried about reuniting with the woman he loved five million years ago. Still, he was humorous to have around. That time he made a knock knock jokeabout killing Bonnie’s dad? Or he lamented the fickleness of love to that unassuming, doomed couple waiting for the bus?
4. Qetsiyah. Tessa. Whatever her name was, she was the best. She may have had similarly petty motives as Silas, but she managed to execute them with a level of passion, finesse, and style that we truly admired. Qetsiyah gave new meaning to the phrase: Hell hath no fury like a witch scorned. If she ever feels like miraculously making her way back from the netherworld, we’d welcome her back with open arms.
3. Kai. We haven’t spent much time with Kai, but we already kind of love him? Sure, he’s crazy and the worst sibling ever, but he is also very entertaining. Last week’s scene in which he complained about the paradox of skinny jeans and large phones before using his earbuds to strangle his cab driver? Already a classic TVD moment. We’re so glad to have a fun TVD villain again. It’s been too long.
2. Klaus. Klaus’s tenure as the villain of TVD marked a true golden period for the show. He managed to be both scary and compelling, something that is extremely hard to pull off, but is a trait of the best TVD villains. His relationship with Caroline remains one of the most fascinating on the show, an example of an unexpected dynamic that raised two already-entertaining characters to the epic level.
1. Katherine. We love the Mikaelson villain, but we’ll always choose Katherine Pierce as TVD’s best villain because, without her, there would be no show. Sure, all vampires descend from the Original vampire family, but Katherine is the one who turned Mystic Falls into her own personal playground and put the Salvatore brothers on the path to being the most epic bromance of all time. Katherine Pierce is totally evil, brutally honest, and so much fun. Man do we miss her.
