THE VAMPIRE DIARIES 6X5 'THE WORLD HAS TURNED AND LEFT' RECAP

In a truly fitting Halloween episode, the Vampire Diaries delivered not only a season best Episode but quite possibly the best in years. After the mind-boggling discovery that dead girlfriend Ivy is actually a vampire, Stefan pawns her off on Caroline. Elena organises a date with Liam while setting up Alaric with the hottest Doctor in town. Damon and Bonnie continue to trust Kai and tragedy strikes at the Whitmore College Corn Maze.  

The episode begins with Stefan, trying to fit back into his new life in Savannah he is woken to the buzzing of his phone. When he answers it's Tripp telling him that the Vampire Enzo still hadn't given him any names but pointed him towards Savannah and Stefan. After hanging up the phone Stefan hears noises coming from the kitchen, when he enters he see's Ivy eating the fridge. She blames Stefan for her transformation and for not advising her on how to be a vampire properly. Ivy attacks Stefan forcing the older Vampire to break her neck.

On campus Stefan barges into Caroline’s room begging her to take Ivy off his hands. He wants Caroline to take care of the newbie vamp while he finds Luke to make a daylight ring. Stefan must put on his best performance if he wants Caroline to accept, and reluctantly she does.

In his class Alaric teaches the students about the Corn Maze's supernatural background stating that a man returned to his wife and farm to find her with his brother, after killing the brother the husband chases his wife through the cornfield, and every Halloween since she can be seen running through the maze. He ends the speech with a slight jab at Damon saying, “Never fall in love, especially with your brother’s girl.” After class Elena approaches Alaric, he asks her if she's changed her mind about not compelling Damon back yet, she stays true to her decision saying, "as if I'm just gonna wake up one day and realise my life is over if I don't have the traumatic memories of loving a serial killer." Before she leaves she persuades Alaric to attend the Corn Maze, telling him to stop avoiding life. 

Outside Elena runs into Liam. After the unexpected kiss in last weeks episode, she invites him to the Corn Maze as her date. Just like Alaric, Liam is reluctant to attend such a childish event but is persuaded when Elena puts her flirt on. Back in 1994 Damon is over the moon about his chances of getting back to Elena and his brother, Bonnie on the other hand has her doubts, she still doesn't trust Kai, and for good reason. Damon tells her not to worry and if Kai gets in the way of their plan he'll kill him. First Bonnie and Damon must find out what the spell is and go from there, and Kai isn't giving up the info. He tells Damon to dig into the underground tunnels while he goes into town for supplies.

Back in her dorm Caroline is trying to control Ivy but as we've seen  Ivy's not too good with the whole snatch eat erase idea. Caroline has already given her the basic class, you know the whole don't go near vervein or sunlight and watch out for Tripp speech. Caroline suggests that they play a board game to distract Ivy but when she has her back turned the new and very annoying Vampire snapped Caroline's neck.

At the corn field Elena meets her date who's surprised to see that his boss, sexy Dr Josie is there. Elena tells him that she's setting Josie up with somebody and neither party know. I wonder who the mystery guy is.

Searching the streets for Ivy, Caroline's pissed off that once again Stefan isn't answering his phone. She tells him that if anyone gets hut it's Stefan's fault for leaving Ivy with her and not helping top find her. Stefan meanwhile visits Alaric on campus after getting the sunlight ring from Luke. Alaric is still pissed that Stefan told him he was searching for Damon, Rick spent months feeding information to Stefan which he later discovered was wasted. Stefan asks Alaric to help him with Ivy, to compel her to not feed on humans and to leave Stefan. Alaric refuses to help and tells him to get out of his face.

Alone on the prowl Ivy wants to put what Caroline taught her to good use. She attacks an innocent guy in the middle of the street and successfully stops before killing him, it's the erase part she has trouble with. Ivy doesn't seem to be able to control her compulsion meaning the guy will remember what she is.

Damon continues to dig, as he hits the tunnel Kai reappears. Bonnie and Kai argue and Bonnie tells him to give them the spell or do good on his threat to steal Bonnie's power, killing her. Kai grabs a hold of her taking her power bit by bit, when he releases Bonnie comes to the conclusion that Kai doesn't know the spell, meaning he's useless to them. Bonnie uses her magic and stabs Kai straight through the chest with a pickaxe.In the Corn Field Elena's date couldn't be going smoother. She tells Liam about Damon and how the night isn't about him, it's about them. Alaric meets Josie in the maze and the two quickly discover what Elena had planned. The Doctor tells him to get her out of the party and to a bar for a drink, that's when the borderline alcoholic which is Rick pulls out his flask, offering Josie some. 

While driving Tyler checks a text, the guy Ivy attacked runs out into the middle of the road and Tyler hits him, In the crash Tyler gets knocked unconscious causing the truck to plummet full speed into the maze.  Alaric is able to get Josie to safety but she gets a nasty gash on her arm. Countless other people are hurt in the event though. Surviving the crash Tyler smashes his way out of the truck, he finds the guy he hit still beneath the car, begging for help. Tyler knows that if the guy dies his Werewolf gene will be triggered, sending him back to the curse he hated. 

In the maze Liam is using his medical training to help a woman who's injured, when Elena arrives he tells her that the woman will die, and there's nothing he can do. Elena tells Liam to go help somebody else while she tries to save the woman. Using her vampire blood Elena quickly heals the dying woman. Tyler calls Elena asking her to help with the guy, saying that if he dies Tyler will be cursed, Elena tells him that more people were hurt meaning there's more than the guy Tyler hit that are dying, meaning there's a good chance of him triggering the gene. 

Still searching the streets Caroline's joined by Stefan, he admits that he was half way out of town before he listened to her messages. After having another fight about how much of a dick Stefan is Caroline tells him that when Damon died she hoped he would come back, not because she missed him but because Stefan would also return. Caroline tells Stefan to leave.

Bonnie has a theory for how they can escape, she believes that Kai never wanted her magic, because he needed her. Bonnie tells Damon that she's the key, the door needs a Bennett witch to open. As the eclipse nears Bonnie and Damon prepare to return home. Damon repeats what she said in the finale, that there must be a million other people she'd rather be with right now, to which she replied, "not exactly." Just before she starts the spell Bonnie is shot through the chest with an arrow, it seems part of Kai's prison sentence stops him from dying, he states that he tried to commit suicide hundreds of times. After she falls to the ground Damon runs to her side allowing Kai to run for the Ascendant. Bonnie tells Damon to stop Kai from using the Ascendant, he wooshes to stop the villain and the duo wrestle for a while. Bonnie is able to pull herself over to the Ascendant. 

In the maze the guy Tyler hit is barely holding on. Liv appears and uses her magic to push the car off the victim. Tyler starts to freak out to Liv about how scared he is, he doesn't want to be a Werewolf again. Elena and Liam are helping another woman who is struggling to breathe, Elena is willing to reveal herself to Liam but doesn't have to when he saves the woman with some non supernatural modern medicine. 

Everyone in the maze escaped safely but the guy Tyler hits is fading quickly, after talking to Josie it's clear that the man will die soon. Seeing how badly Tyler is freaking out Liv decides to cut off the man's airways, meaning she's the one who killed him, not Tyler. Before Liam and Elena leaves he see's the woman who was dying earlier, walking away perfectly fine, clearly he's curious since he left the woman to die with Elena. 

Still suffering from a arrow wound Bonnie knows she can't escape, but hell if she's going to die leaving Damon there alone with Kai. She uses her magic to pull Damon into the moonlight and throws him the Ascendant. After saying a few magic words Damon is swept away in a harsh white light leaving only Bonnie, Kai and the destroyed fragments of the Ascendant alone. 

In the hospital Josie is loaded full of painkillers, in her state she tells Alaric that she believes they were meant to meet. Afraid that he will only cause her pain Alaric compels Jo and tells her that she thinks he's boring, and alcoholic and she doesn't want to kiss him. The Doctor looks at him saying that the date was a disaster, and he is an alcoholic but she'll never find him boring. Josie kisses Alaric before she walks away. So why didn't the compulsion work? Is the doctor on Vervein or could something stranger be going on?

After calling Caroline, Ivy waits in the middle of the road waiting to be rescued, a van stops to see if she's ok and Tripp steps out. Recognising him as the Vampire hunter Ivy goes for the kill but Tripp quickly takes down the rookie vampire with vervein darts. 

At the bar Tyler holds Liv's hand and thanks her for saving him, he tells her not to feel bad becuase she couldn't have saved the man but she did save him. 

The final scene of the episode is by far the best and most emotional. Stefan visits his family crypt he talks to Damon telling him that he's having a hard time without his brother, that he's lost and doesn't know what to do. Stefan throws a bottle against the wall but is surprised to see someone catch it, As he looks up he see's his brother.After making a few seeing dead people jokes Damon tells Stefan, "It’s a hell of a long story brother, but I’m back.” Seeing his brother before him Stefan hugs Damon and bursts into tears, along with me and I'm sure every other member of the audience.
