Where Are Damon and Bonnie?

The Vampire Diaries Season 6: Where Are Damon and Bonnie?

Damon Salvatore and Bonnie Bennett will be back for Season 6 of The Vampire Diaries, but in what form? The two characters were ensconced in a white light in the Season 5 finale, and we don’t have much narrative precedent for what will happen next. Where are Damon and Bonnie? We speculate below!

They are ghosts
You can never count out the possibility of characters turning into ghosts on this show. Though the destruction of the Other Side would seem to prevent ghosts from existing anymore, we’re not entirely sure how these things work, so it is still a possibility. Have Damon and Bonnie come back as ghosts, able to see and hear their loved ones, but unable to communicate with them? Talk about torture! We’re not sure if Grams would do that to Bonnie and, given that we’re guessing it was her planning that kept Damon and Bonnie from going kaput along with the rest of the occupants of the Other Side, we’re give less likelihood to a transition into ghost-fom for these characters. (That’s so Season 5. Amirite, Bon Bon?)

They are alive, but can’t remember anything
Before you give us that look, it’s not like TVD hasn’t played the Amnesia Card before. Just last season, Stefan was struck with an inconvenient case of memory loss in the wake of Tessa frying his brain. Might something similar have happened to Damon and Bonnie? Julie Plec told The Hollywood Reporter: "The way we look at it, Season 6 is a beautiful and organic reset. The theme of the season is everybody gets to start over. That's what we're going to do.” Have Damon and Bonnie “started over” in the form of a continued life, but one without knowledge of where they came from or who they are? Crazier things have happened on this show.

In another plane of existence
We know the Other Side is gone, but are there other planes of existence out there? We’re not sure if the show could pull this off — though it’s a supernatural drama, it’s always been grounded in the reality of a very specific setting — but we’re willing to try if it means a compelling story about these characters trying to find their way back to their loved ones across seemingly uncrossable existential boundaries. Drama!

They’ve traveled through time
So far, TVD has yet to go full-on science fiction with their plot devices, but these things can happen later in a show’s run. (Just ask Felicity.) This show is all about the flashbacks. Imagine how much fun they could have if two of its characters were stuck in another time period (perhaps, Damon’s native 19th-century?) — or, bopping around Sliders-style? Yeah, the likelihood of TVD playing the Time Travel Card is pretty low, but we’re throwing it out there anyway. Because what’s a summer hiatus without some wacky speculation?
