Will Stefan Die?

The Vampire Diaries Burning Question: Will Stefan Die?

Vampire Diaries executive producer Julie Plec has teased major character deaths before the end of Season 5. But there’s major and then there’s major, and we never considered that beloved brooder Stefan Salvatore could be in danger. Then, we got the synopsis for the Season 5 finale. Will Stefan die?!
Yes, he’s dunzo. Guess who’s missing from the synopsis for Season 5 Episode 22 "Home" 5,! Our guy Stefan. Not only that, but “Heartbroken by an unexpected tragedy, Damon is focused on holding himself together while pushing Bonnie harder than ever to find a way to stop the disintegration of the Other Side”; “Elena takes matters into her own hands and demands that Liv and Luke help her”; and “Liv’s off-hand remark regarding Stefan gets a surprisingly emotional response from Caroline.” Um, yikes! We hate to be potentially alarmist, but these clues seem to add up to something nigh unimaginable: Stefan’s death. Say it isn’t so, show!
Yes, but only for a little while. Of course, death isn’t what it used to be on this show, and it has always been relatively negotiable. With the disintegration of the Other Side has come a thinning of the barrier between the supernatural characters who has passed on to the supernatural purgatory and the those who are still living on this mortal plane. Heck, we can see from Enzo’s haunting in the promo for this week’s “What Lies Beneath,” that being dead no longer means you can’t still affect those on this side of the veil. Stefan may die in the season’s penultimate episode, but how long would he stay dead, really? Would there be a way to reverse the effects while the Other Side is in upheaval? Probably.
No, the show would never kill one of the main three. Or maybe we are completely and totally drawing the wrong conclusion here. After all, Stefan is one of the main three on this show. It’s hard to imagine this show without him, and we doubt TVD would explore his death — even in a temporary manner. There are lots of other explanations for Stefan’s seeming absence and the grief exhibited by his loved ones in the synopsis for the season finale. Maybe they incorrectly think he’s dead (who doesn’t love a good faked death storyline?) or maybe he’s been terribly injured. With this show, almost anything is possible. Though killing those with hero hair? Less so.
