Will Claire Holt Return to The Vampire Diaries?

The departure of Rebekah Mikaelson (Claire Holt) both from New Orleans and as a main character on The Originals has left us oh-so-sad. But is there a chance that Rebekah might return to the show from which the character originally sprang? Will Rebekah return to The Vampire Diaries?

As much as we’d like to see Rebekah on TVD — or, you know, as a character on any show — we don’t think there’s much chance we will be seeing her on TVD anytime soon. According to TV.com, the reason for her departure as a main character from The Originals was because Claire did not want to live in Atlanta, which is where both TVD and The Originals are filmed. In fact, the show and its creative team knew from the beginning that Rebekah’s full-time presence on the spin-off would only be a short-term arrangement.

Having said that, there has been talk of Rebekah returning to The Originals as a guest star or recurring character at the end of Season 1 and in Season 2. If she is open to this, then there might be a chance that there could be a similar arrangement with TVD. Might she return to TVD in a guest star capacity?

It certainly seems possible narratively. When Rebekah left TVD, she and main character Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) had just returned from an epic summer-long tour of Europe. When she said goodbye to him in the Season 5 premiere of that show, the two seemed to be on very good terms. Rebekah made a subsequent brief appearance in Season 5, Episode 11, showing up in time to save Matt from a vault he’d been buried alive in. The grins the two shared with one another were near-blinding.

When Klaus asked Rebekah what she wanted in her departure episode, she told him: “The same things that I have wanted since I was a child: I want a home. I want a family. I want someone to love me. And I want to live.” Could Matt Donovan be that family, that someone to love her? Though he’s expressed disinterest in getting involved with a supernatural partner in the past, he didn’t seem too worried about it while engaging in a three-some with not one, but two vampires in Prague. And, despite continuing to be one of the moral hearts of TVD, he’s yet to find someone to love. His most recent love interest — Nadia — died in the last episode. With everything he’s been through, might Matt be more open to exploring something more with Rebekah?

Despite the narrative possibilities of Mebekah, we’re not going to get our hopes up about Rebekah’s return to TVD. Maybe it will happen one day, for an important episode, but we’re guessing that the actress will make The Originals her guest starring priority -- as she should, in our opinion.
