The Vampire Diaries Season 5 Spoilers: Stefan and Elena's "Love Story" Is Far From Over

The Vampire Diaries’ central love triangle is up in the air right now. Though  Elena (Nina Dobrev) may love Damon (Ian Somerhalder), she doesn’t want to be with him (or so she says). Meanwhile, the Travelers have a plot brewing that may bring Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Elena back together.

At the TVD PaleyFest panel, executive producer Julie Plec weighed in on the future of Stelena. She said the show would be diving into the doppelganger prophecy that says the doppelgangers will find eventually and always gravitate towards one another: "We dig deep into this idea of the universe drawing them together," Julie said, according to TV Guide. "It leads Elena and Stefan to a lot of conversations to their love story and free will."

This certainly lines up with what we’ve seen in this recent promo for the upcoming episodes of Season 5. In the minute-long video, we hear Markos (aka the Travelers’ leader, soon to be introduced) say: “I’m the reason Stefan and Elena are being drawn together.” Is this a prophecy the Travelers ensure happens so that they can have access to the doppelgangers? It’s kind of like a doppelganger homing beacon, ensuring that if the Travelers find one doppelganger, they can find the other. If so, it’s not so much a prophecy as an emotionally manipulative spell, Travelers! We’ll have to wait and see, but from the looks of this promo and the sound of Julie’s tease, Stelena may be finding their way back to one another soon.
