Are Stefan and Caroline the New Pacey and Joey? Julie Plec Thinks So!

At the beginning of The Vampire Diaries, one never would have guessed that Stefan Salvatore and Caroline Forbes would one day end up together, but that seems to be where things are heading in Season 6 of the vampire romance. This set-up is not unlike another famous TV romance: the one between Joey Potter (Katie Holmes) and Pacey Witter (Joshua Jackson) on Dawson’s Creek, aka the show TVD showrunner Julie Plec once worked on. How does she feel about fan comparisons stating Steroline is the new Joey/Pacey?

"Absolutely, I welcome them," Julie told E! News. "I remember the day that I knew it was a friendship that was meant to grow and grow and grow and see if we could go anywhere with it. And that was episode two of Season 2."
Yep! The moment in question is one of our favorite Steroline moments of all time. It was the moment Stefan calms newbie Caroline down shortly after her transition in Season 2, Episode 2 (“Brave New World”). Caroline is freaking out after her first kill, so Stefan leads her into the bathroom, cleans the blood off of her face, and teaches her how to stay in control. Then, he tells her: “I promise you I will not let anything happen to you.”
If Steroline is the new Pacey and Joey, then does that mean the two besties will eventually turn romantic for reals? Julie teased: "I think that they're going to be rooted in a deep, deep friendship. And so it's really just a matter of can that friendship turn romantic or not?"
