The Vampire Diaries Season 5: Will Damon and Elena Make Things Work?

If Delena was a Facebook relationship status, it would definitely be “it’s complicated.” Things were tricky before both Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) were infected with a Ripper Virus that makes them crave other vampires’ blood (and, in Damon’s case, pop their heads right off). Will these two crazy kids be able to work things out on The Vampire Diaries?

Yes, because they’re still totally in love. If you’ve seen the promo for the next episode, then you’ll know that Elena loves Damon and she can’t stop, OK?! This is despite the fact that not one, but both of them have been infected with a virus that could lead to the other’s death, especially in Elena’s case, as her Ripper Virus is laced with werewolf venom, which presumably makes her bite toxic to those vampires she doesn’t kill with her bloodlust.

Despite all of these facts, we can’t help but think that these two have a chance. If they’re both in, then there’s nothing that can keep them apart, even a Super Ripper Virus coursing through Elena’s veins. They may have to play it cool for a little while, but they’ll find the cures for their respective viruses — perhaps with the help of Enzo’s old crush, Maggie — and they’ll be together forever. The end.

No, Elena will not be able to forgive Damon for what he’s done. Here’s the thing: we don’t think that the Super Ripper Virus is the biggest threat to Delena right now. The biggest threat to Delena is Damon’s actions in the wake of what he thought was Elena’s dumping of him (it was actually Katherine pretending to be Elena — duh, Damon). He killed Aaron, aka her first and only college friend; kidnapped Jeremy, almost letting him die; and cut out Dr. Wes’ eyeball, killing their best hope for a cure. These are all frustrating actions, amirite?

Even if Damon and Elena manage to find the cures for their viruses, we’re not sure if Elena will be able to move past these actions. Although she was willing to look past Damon’s murder of the previous Whitmore generation (while they were dating, nonetheless), we’re not sure if she’ll be able to do the same with Damon’s offing and endangering of the people she cares about.
