Not Everyone Is Going to Survive

Spoilers Alert!

We’re used to watching the characters we love die on The Vampire Diaries, but they often come back. It sounds like that possibility may be taken away before Season 5 comes to an end. What did TVD executive producer Julie Plec tell TVLine about the demise of the Other Side?
”There are going to be a lot of goodbyes as we realize the other side is disintegrating,” Julie teased. “Not everybody is going to survive that. We’re going to have to say goodbye to some characters that we’ve grown to love over the years. That’s what we’ll see when we get to the finale.”
Yikes! Does this mean we’ll be losing characters who are currently alive and well, or that the characters who have already passed over to the Other Side will be gone forever? It sounds like the latter, though we wouldn’t completely discount the possibility of both. If the Other Side is destroyed, that fight could take some characters who are currently kicking with it.
As for the possible destruction of the Other Side and what it will mean for the former characters who sometimes pop back from that side of the veil for a guest star role, we have mixed feelings. On the one hand, we love seeing characters like Alaric, Vicki, Grams, Kol, etc. cross back over from time-to-time to say hello. On the other hand, we’ve long said that TVD’s lack of long-term and complete consequences when it comes to death can make character deaths on this show feel cheap or light. We think it might be good for the show overall to lose the Other Side — even if we’ll miss Alaric something fierce.
