Joseph Morgan on The Vampire Diaries’ Klaroline Hookup: It Was a "Goodbye"
Fans have beenbegging for a potential romance between Klaus and Carolinesince Season 3 of The Vampire Diaries, and after a sexy romp in the woods during the 100th episode of the series, it looked like Klaroline might actually be possible. But the TVD Powers That Be haven’t been so optimistic. Executive producer Julie Plec said the Klaroline hookup was a way to “end that chapter” in Caroline’s live, and now, Originals star Joseph Morgan is echoing the sentiment.
"When Julie [Plec] talked to me about having Klaus be in the [Vampire Diaries'] 100th episode and that we would be ending that story, I thought it was a good idea," he told TVGuide.com. "I knew there was a huge fan base for those two characters, and it was important to pay off that relationship to a certain extent, but also be clear that Klaus exists now in New Orleans, fighting for power with a child about to be born, and Caroline is dealing with more young-adult issues and college, so these two characters are growing further and further apart. So while I thought it was appropriate they would have that liaison, it will be preceded by the condition that this will be a goodbye.”
As much as it pains us to say this, JoMo does have a point. With Klaus the leading man on The Originals and Caroline still very much part of the drama in Mystic Falls, the likelihood of them being together right now is slim. But, despite Klaus and Caroline’s very final goodbye, there’s always a chance Caroline might find herself in New Orleans someday. (After all, did anyone expect Cordelia to move to Los Angeles and take a job at Angel Investigations on The WB’s hit Buffy spin-off Angel?) And at the end of the day, Klaroline fans, we’ll always have that romp in the woods.
“It was giving everybody what they wanted the most and what they wanted the least in one fell swoop, but certainly it needed to happen because otherwise it's like dangling a carrot forever,” Joseph added. “I think Klaus will be a man of his word and not return to Mystic Falls again, but they needed to have that connection before they severed that tie."
Again, the tie between Klaus and Caroline may be “severed” for now, but even Julie Plec has kept a teeny tiny window of opportunity open for something more. If anything, Klaus and Caroline’s hookup put the ball in Caroline’s court. If and when she wants to take Klaus up on his offer of seeing the world, she knows where to find him.
