If there’s one former Vampire Diaries character we miss more than just about anyone else, it’sAlaric Saltzman (Matt Davis). Part history teacher, part vampire hunter, he was the only parental presence on this show that ever felt helpful. (OK, maybe Sheriff Forbes — on a good day.) That’s why we’re pretty amped for the possibility of his return. Is Matt Davis back on set?Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood) just shared this photo of a whole bunch of TVD-affiliated people (both of the actor and production varieties). Including in the shot, current co-star Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan) and former co-star Matt. Does this mean Alaric is back on the TVD set?

Not necessarily. The snapshot seems to be taken in a social setting, i.e. not whilst at work. But that doesn’t completely rule out the possibility of Matt back on the set. If he’s hanging with his former co-stars, there’s a chance they’ve reunited in anticipation for his return appearance to the show. This particularly seems a likely possibility given that executive producer Julie Plec has hinted at a “rebirth” and E! Online has even gone so far as to detail that some currently dead fan favorites will be returning. Few characters meet that criteria as well as Alaric.

Though we think Alaric has already enjoyed the privilege of some awesome character arcs, we think he could be useful on the show right now. For Damon, who has seriously stumbled in his efforts to be good and needs someone to slap the self-pity right out of him. We’re sure drinking buddy and tough love BFF Alaric would be up for the job. After the latest episode, it’s also obvious that both Elena and Jeremy are still in serious need of a parental figure. Elena is struggling to separate what she needs and wants from Damon, while Jeremy has pretty much given up the rest of his adolescence because he’s too busy getting pulled into the latest supernatural shenanigan. Yeah, they’re doing OK on their own, but Alaric would make it so much better. They would have their family back.
