Will Bonnie Figure Out Katherine Is Alive?
The 100th episode ofThe Vampire Diariestook us all by surprise when the ever-diabolical Katherine Pierce (Nina Dobrev) used her Traveler powers to become a passenger in Elena Gilbert’s body — but we’ve been scratching our heads about why Katherine didn’t passBonnie Bennett(Bonnie Bennett).
There was the pivotal scene with Bonnie — the current anchor to the Other Side — seeing Katherine in all her dead glory, but when Katherine didn’t pass through her, it seemed like the Mystic Falls gang might get suspicious of her current state, which could really foil her plans of possessing Elena forever.
“We needed Bonnie to see Katherine so we knew she was dead,” showrunner Julie Plec revealed at the ATV Festival panel discussion in Atlanta on February 8. “We also couldn’t let Katherine go through Bonnie, and so the line, ‘Will she go through you to get to the other side?’ was kind of — the response was, ‘I think so, I’m not sure. She must be human now.’ But then again, she is also intentionally supernatural in these other ways, so we left it kind of deliberate ambiguity in hopes that it would slip Bonnie’s mind and she would chalk it up to, ‘Oh, she’s human.’ So when Katherine comes out and she’s perfectly acting as Elena, nobody had any reason to be suspicious.”
That answers a lot of questions, Jules! Katherine’s supernatural status has been rather ambiguous since Elena force-fed her the cure in the Season 4finale. The first half of Season 5 followed Katherine as her body began to decay in her new human state, but the fact that she is a doppelganger and also a Traveler has always put her somewhere in supernatural limbo.
With everyone thinking she didn’t pass through Bonnie because she’s human, Katherine was given a head-start in her quest to banish Elena from her body forever — though Matt Donovan’s (Zach Roerig) recent sleuthing has proved that her secret won’t stay hidden for long. Better get to work, Katherine!
