Vampire Diaries Burning Question

How Will Elena React to Damon When She Returns?

Wherever you may fall on the Katherine Pierce v. Elena Gilbertdebate, it seems inevitable that the latter’s consciousness will return to The Vampire Diarieseventually. And while that’s all well and good, things have changed in Elena’s life in the time since she’s been floating in the passenger-punked ether, namely, one Damon Salvatore. When Elena was banished from her body, she was about to get back together with the sexy vamp. Given what Damon’s done since, will she still want to when she returns?
Folks, Damon has been super mean. There, we said it! It’s one thing to kill recurring characters we don’t really care about (R.I.P. Aaron), but to endanger the life of Jeremy, whose deaths are always the hardest to take? That’s going too far! Damon’s reaction to Katherine-pretending-to-be-Elena breaking up with him was to go after people she cares about: her new college friend, her brother. Regardless of the fact that it wasn’t really Elena who broke up with him, he still chose to take those actions. And he can’t take them back.
There’s also the manner of Elena’s return to consider. According to the synopsis for Season 5, Episode 15 (“Gone Girl”), “Stefan, Caroline, and Matt come up with a desperate new plan to save Elena’s life.” Sounds like Damon isn’t part of the rescue mission, and that might potentially hurt Elena. When in mortal danger, it’s nice to imagine that one’s loved ones are doing everything they can to rescue her. Sure, this is an unpredictable and tricky situation in which Katherine successfully fooled Mystic Falls for a time. Logically, Elena might be able to understand why Damon wasn’t there to save her. Emotionally, it might just make her sad. Even if Damon’s excuse for not being there involves being a vampire cannibal, he kind of got himself into that mess himself.
What we’re trying to say here is: we can’t see Delena getting back together anytime soon. Not without seriously damaging the integrity of Elena’s character. We don’t think it was particularly in-character for Damon to react the way he did given all of the growth he’s made in the last four seasons, but what’s done is done. Elena was ready to stand by Damon regardless of his recent choices, but there’s a line, and that line is usually Elena’s brother. Sure, Damon’s killed him before (thank you, Gilbert ring!), but that was before he was in a committed relationship with Elena and before Elena repeatedly left Jer in his possession, trusting that he would make sure he’s OK. Arguably, that distinction is irrelevant, but on this show, the lines of morality and realistic human reaction are supernaturally blurred as everything else. Basically: Elena’s gonna be sopissed.
